About

Used strategically, design greatly impacts businesses and the public sector!

Design Driven Romania is the first from a series of national conference to focus on design as an essential asset for companies and government alike.

By using design as a problem-solving process, innovation can arise in products, services, society and at government level in ways never seen before. “A more systematic use of design, complementary to R&D” is recommended by the European Commission in the hope that it would improve European competitiveness.

Currently, most of the Romanian public and private sector do not use design at all. Some consider it just aesthetics while only the very few use it strategically. A vast majority has yet to learn about the positive economic effects of this discipline.

The conference aims to tackle this situation and to push design at the forefront of Romanian innovation, as the rest of Europe is already doing so.

Agenda

DESIGN IN INNOVATION POLICIES

AIMED AT POLICY MAKERS, THE PANEL WILL INTRODUCE THE PARTICIPANTS IN THE MAJOR ROLE THAT THE DESIGN COUNCIL HAD IN REVIVING THE POST-WAR UK THROUGH INDUSTRIAL DESIGN, AS WELL AS THE WAYS IT HAS PROVED THE VALUE OF DESIGN IN THE PUBLIC, PRIVATE AND THIRD SECTOR.

The Birmingham City University will discuss how it turned into the biggest provider of talent for cultural and creative industries. This was part of a major Birmingham shiſt from an industrial city to one where creative industries bloom.

The above case study aims to underline the relation universities and cities can develop in order to improve the local economy by growing a competent workforce, thus ensuring the predictable growth of specific sectors.

BCU will also discuss cross-innovation and the role of design labs in helping governments use strategic design.

OUTLOOK/PURPOSE/MISSION

The regularization of design as a discipline and of the ways it is being mastered!

This is the first in a chain of conferences related to the role of design in the private and public sector. Its purpose - the creation of a national framework for regulating this discipline and promoting its intensive use in the society.

Future initiatives aim at the establishment of a Romanian Design Council. Such an organization will promote design at a national level, offer training and consultancy, facilitate collaboration between professionals and organize specific events.

Regulating design as a discipline through university courses and certified professionals is yet another objective of Design Driven Romania. Beneficiaries should be able to discern between freelancers and specialized agencies, as well as trusting their services based on recognised certifications.

While other European societies are years ahead in this matter, these are good times for accelerated learning, cross-country collaboration and an open attitude towards the new european innovation policies.
